Wildlife

Here are a few pictures of the neighbours we have at The Exmoor Centre.

Red deer are often passing the bunkhouse, they spend their time between the open moor to the south of us and the steep wooded valleys to the north.

Herons fish the river that runs through the site. When disturbed they fly further along the river, if you disturb them again they fly a little further, the third time they fly back around you squarking disapproval before settling back at their original fishing site.

Buzzards are almost always flying somewhere along the valley. Kestrel and Sparrowhawk are also common.

The highland cattle look scary but are generally peaceful beasts and do not come close, they have got used to our Land Rover and don’t rush to get out of the way.

Dreadful picture I know! Foxes are always lurking about the valley, if you sit quietly you can often see them going about their business.

Butterflies are everywhere, these meadowbrowns are very commonbat2

Daubentons Bats are a spectacular sight in the early evening, they are quite large at up to 275mm wing-span.

goldfinch

Goldfinches are occasional visitors to the site, the smaller garden type birds can be seen at close quarters from the hide at the top of our site where you can sit at tree top level.deer3

Again, more Red Deer, you’ll never tire of seeing them.
